Lip Swap allows you make your idols say what you want them too, force a politician tell the truth, or simply bring a plate of pasta to life - in photo form at least. It is good simple fun, but I am scared it will be used by too many people who just think they are funny.
The smile behind the face
Lip Swap invites you to take a photo of a face, erase the mouth, and then add a video of your own lips beneath it.
It is easy to use. First you need a still image, which you can take from the gallery or use the in-app camera. This picture works as a mask, letting you erase a section of the image using your finger to reveal the video camera beneath. This process isn’t very exact but the feathered brush ensures errors are never too dramatic. Also it must be done in a single movement, as removing your figure and starting again removes previous efforts.
In theory this process should see you rub out the mouth on a face and then place your own mouth underneath to give them a voice. However, you could just as easily make a football talk.
Easy, but not always intuitive
After the area is erased, it is time to record. Before you do there are color and contrast sliders to adjust the video you are about to record, allowing you to balance the live footage’s color to the photo. Then just hit the record button and enjoy your daft creation.
Once that is done, Lip Swap lets you add it to your gallery, erase it, or share via pretty much every method you have installed on your device – including
Like the rest of app, most of this is straightforward, but moving between settings can feel unintuitive. The Android back button moves between some the camera to the gallery, but as the camera is where you start this can confuse. This resulted in me closing the app from the gallery on a number of occasions while trying navigate.
Fun creations
Bar my hick-ups with navigation Lip Swap was easy to use and offered lot of freedom to explore my creativity. It’s just a shame I wasn’t feeling that imaginative.
As an experiment, which Lip Swap openly states it is, it is a good start. If it is developed further, it would be nice to have more in-app options to edit the starting image and clearer navigation.
